Running: Races, Timing, and Tips

Venice 2024. Used on Running post.

Running

This post documents my running journey, and the resources I use to support it.

In-Person Event Tips

All of the tips in quotes are from the FLDC that I duplicated on my website for easy personal reference.

Before Race Day

Responsibilities

“Familiarize yourself with the race course before starting. Volunteers or course markings will direct you at major turns,” but you don’t want to miss anything.

Gear

Running Vest

  • Try-on in-person to see which fit you best and can fit your phone and keys.

Shoes

Miscellaneous

Race Day

Arrival Time

“Arrive at least 45–60 minutes before the start of the race. You need time to find parking, pick up your bib number, warm up, change clothes, and hit the porta-john one last time (and there are usually lines). Plus, you’ll want to hear the race director’s announcements (e.g., talk about the course, water stops, traffic control, and any changes that runners need to know).”

Bib Number

“Use the pins provided to put your bib number on the front of your shirt so that it is visible to course marshals and volunteers at checkpoints and to timers as you cross the finish line. Do not trade or share bib numbers with another person because that confuses our results.”

Starting Line Etiquette

“Not everyone will get a spot on the starting line, and some people will have to line up further back. People who think they are among the fastest should get a spot on the actual line. Pick a spot that roughly matches how fast you think you are, so if you think you’re a mid-pack runner, line up somewhere in the middle. Walkers/hikers should go to the back.”

“When in the starting area, listen carefully to the race director’s announcements and remain quiet so others can hear, as well.”

Concluding the Race

Awards: “Races will have an award ceremony after everyone has finished. Stick around to see if you’ve won an award and to cheer for others who have. Generally speaking, awards are only given to people who are present to collect them.”

Results: “At some races, we post interim results during the race. We also post all the results on the FLRC website, usually within a day or two.”

Dedication and Thanks

Since late 2023, running has been an instrumental part of my life, shaping me in many ways. I’d like to dedicate this page to my friend, Benjamin Brundage, who introduced me to fitness and helped me through some of life’s darker moments.
